- 7:30 a.m., San Elijo Avenue. Pipes Café has been serving hearty breakfasts and lunches since 1995, known for large portions and breakfast burritos, and it's a place where locals still talk surf conditions at the counter. A block away, VG Donut & Bakery, short for "Very Good," pulls a line out the door daily and reads as an institution rather than a bakery. Bump Coffee sits across the parking lot with organic, shade-grown beans.
- 10:00 a.m., 3333 Manchester Avenue. The Cardiff Farmers Market opens at MiraCosta College's San Elijo Campus. The market launched in 2023 and operates as a weekly gathering space for local farmers, food vendors, and artisans, and organizers say it has grown into a regular community event connecting residents with regional producers. It is a Certified California Farmers Market, and it accepts EBT payments, is ADA-compliant, and welcomes leashed dogs. If you have not been in a while, the vendor list now runs to prepared foods and makers, not only produce.
- 12:30 p.m., Seaside Market. Pick up Cardiff Crack for tonight's grill. Regulars will tell you what visitors won't, which is that the burgundy pepper infused tri-tip roast is sold in the parking lot on weekends during peak stretches.

August 2 is the day the town shows up all at once
If you only mark one date on the summer calendar, mark this one. The 21st Annual Cardiff Dog Days of Summer runs Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Encinitas Community Park. It is free. The 2026 program includes an ice cream eating contest for dogs and a lure course by Swift Paws, San Diego Fire Department demonstrations throughout the day, and a libation lounge in partnership with The Lost Abbey, Mezo Agave, Gold Coast Mead, and Burtech Family Vineyard, with Local Roots food trucks.
Two details are worth knowing if you have not gone before. First, Rescue Row is presented by Rancho Coastal Humane Society, and all Rescue Row proceeds are donated to the organization. Second, the City of Encinitas Pet Health Expo runs on-site and provides pet micro-chipping courtesy of the San Diego Humane Society. Bring your dog's paperwork if you have been putting the chip off.

The sculpture at South Coast Highway 101 and Chesterfield Drive is officially titled Magic Carpet Ride, a 6-foot bronze surfer by Matthew Antichevich, mounted on a 6-foot granite base with a poetry inscription by Robert Nanninga. Locals know it as the Kook. The costume tradition is not decoration. It is the town's ongoing performance art. People continue to dress the Kook in various costumes and signage, often around events like birthdays and holidays, and its popularity has produced its own Google Maps feature and community events, including the Cardiff Kook Costume 5K & 10K Run. Summer usually brings a run of graduation, wedding, and Fourth of July themes. Drive past on your way to the beach and check.
Where to eat when it is the good part of the day
Cardiff's dining stack sorts into two zones, and the distinction is useful if you are hosting family in town.
Coast Highway 101, waterfront. Las Olas has been serving Baja-style Mexican food beachside since 1981, and is credited with what it calls "the original" fish taco. San Elijo Avenue and the town center.
